Ivan Dmitritch, the main character in Anton Chekhov’s “The Lottery Ticket,” is portrayed as an ordinary, middle-class man living a simple, contented life with his wife. At the beginning of the story, Ivan appears practical, satisfied, and loving toward his wife. However, his true nature is revealed when the possibility of sudden wealth enters his mind. As he begins to imagine the luxuries that money could bring, his thoughts turn increasingly selfish. He dreams of traveling, owning property, and living freely, without once considering sharing this happiness with his wife. Gradually, his imagination poisons his contentment, filling him with greed, pride, and jealousy. He even begins to resent his wife, suspecting that she might keep the winnings for herself. When it is finally revealed that they did not win, Ivan is left bitter and dissatisfied, showing how easily greed can corrupt an otherwise decent person. Through Ivan’s character, Chekhov illustrates how material desire can destroy peace and affection in human relationships.

Ivan’s wife, on the other hand, is initially portrayed as a simple and optimistic woman. She is the one who first becomes excited about the lottery ticket and invites her husband to check the results with her. Her excitement seems innocent and full of hope, but as Ivan’s greed infects the conversation, she too begins to dream of wealth and luxury. Although her transformation is not as intense as Ivan’s, she also reveals traces of selfishness and discontent. The brief moment of shared fantasy exposes the fragility of their relationship and the greed that lies hidden beneath their domestic harmony. By the end, both husband and wife are left disappointed and disillusioned, realizing how easily happiness can vanish when overtaken by greed. Chekhov uses their characters to highlight the moral that the desire for wealth can destroy not only one’s peace of mind but also the bond of love and understanding between people.
